You probably only give the zipper of your dress a second thought when it gets spoilt in public and you’re trying to see if it could be remedied to take you home safely. Very likely, all you do is get into your dress, pull at the zipper to fit yourself in. If you’re a designer, you’ll pay attention to details like; the zipper color with respect to the color of the dress, the zipper visibility, quality, etc. But there are some other interesting little details about zipper you may not know. Here are some:
- The largest zipper producing company in the world produces about 5 million zippers per day! Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha is a Japanese company that owns about half the world’s zipper business. Ever noticed tiny letters YKK on your zipper, it’s from this company. YKK has factories in over 71 countries in the world.
There is a type of zipper that can be locked with a key! It’s called a Key Lock Slider. It’s an innovative idea from the world leader in zipper, YKK. It comes with a complete set of two keys. Perfect for gym bags, purses, etc.
- There are three main types of zipper: Coil, Stamped Plastic, and Stamped Metal.
Coil zippers are a popular type of zipper made from coiled nylon or polyester that is either stitched or woven into tape.
Molded Plastic zippers have the teeth molded directly onto the zipper tape. They are usually the most cost efficient type of zipper because it requires very cheap materials for making. Metal zippers have metal teeth that are clamped onto the zipper tape. They are the perfect option for heavy-duty coats, duffle bags, and leather works. And, of course they are the heaviest of the three. Also, they tend to get stuck quite easily.
Another category is the Invisible zippers. They are a bit different from all others, in that the teeth are on the backside of the zipper. It is the perfect choice for formal dresses.
